
HOW HUMID IS IT, REALLY?!
Delaware Park will host a microclimate land cover analysis using climate technology and equipment provided by the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning.
Currently, there are 10 temperature and relative humidity sensors placed throughout both east and west sides of the park. Each sensor is uniquely placed throughout the park to analyze how differences in vegetation can affect temperature and humidity.
Delaware Park is a large urban park that consists of numerous land cover types, including small woods, small bodies of water, multiple walking and biking trails, and open areas like the golf course. Upon collecting results, the park will be able to provide a baseline for comparison, or ‘ideal’ results, when compared to the rest of the city.
This analysis is part of a larger research initiative to collect microclimate measurements that can be compared with those from other urban areas throughout Buffalo. Other forms of analysis will include acoustic bird sensors, satellite thermal and vegetation imagery, and plant identification to verify native vs non-native plant species. Ideally, the combined research will inform future park design and serve as a guide for city planners and architects when designing urban biodiversity features.
The temperature and relative humidity sensors will collect data for 1 year, from Fall 2026 – Fall 2027, with intent to finalize before the UB 2027 Fall Semester begins.
