Position Title: Small Engine Mechanic Assistant

  • Reports To: Assistant Mechanic
  • Salary Range: $19.22 – $21.00
  • Supervises: 0
  • Requirements: City of Buffalo residency | Driver’s license required.

Position Summary:

The Small Engine Mechanic Assistant is an indoor/outdoor hands-on position, working directly under the Assistant Mechanic. Experience with general landscaping equipment required.

This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week with non-exempt status according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Overtime hours may be required at certain times, with supervisor approval.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine small engine maintenance, including but not limited to lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs;
  • Test and inspect engines for malfunctioning parts;
  • Repair or replace worn, defective, or broken parts;
  • Reassemble and reinstall components and engines following repairs;
  • Responsible for sharpening all types of mower blades;
  • Performs preventive maintenance work, such as checking oil and fluid levels on all equipment;
  • Delivers fuel to various locations within the Olmsted system for equipment needs.

Qualifications and Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • City of Buffalo residency within six-(6) months of hire date;
  • A minimum of 1-year related experience;
  • Leads by example and adheres to code of ethics for confidentiality, discretion, and policies;
  • Welcomes change and creativity, and is open to exploring new methods, opportunities, or options, and is supportive of staff feedback and input;
  • Willingness to learn new skills;
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with other employees;
  • Resourcefulness in utilizing time, equipment and/or supplies approved within the annual budget to the greatest benefit of the Conservancy;

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • A combination of both indoor and outdoor work environments;
  • Outdoor work may be performed in extreme weather conditions;
  • A combination of independent and team collaboration;
  • Job duties may require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods of time, as well as lift and/or move heavy objects which at times could be up to 50+lbs;
  • Transport equipment on a 30 ft trailer throughout park system;
  • Required to drive distances between park locations and to operate standard to heavy park equipment and vehicles;
  • Weekend and holiday work may be required;
  • Flexible hours depending on workload and ever-changing priorities;
  • Must be able to adapt to ever-changing resources and limited budgets.
