Position Summary:
The Forestry Foreperson will manage and oversee the daily projects and personnel of the forestry department for the Olmsted Park System which consists of 850 acres of urban parkland with approximately 16,000 trees. This is a hands-on position extensively utilizing forestry equipment in their daily projects which may include: tree establishment, maintenance, training and protection, pruning, tree removal, pesticide application and equipment maintenance. The position is part of the Forestry Department and reports directly to the Forestry Manager.
This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week with non-exempt status according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Overtime hours may be required at certain times, with supervisor approval.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works with the Forestry Manager to develop and prioritize daily tasks according to the forestry work plan;
- Coordinate and oversee urban forestry work such as tree planting, pruning, tree removal, replacement as well as invasive species management;
- Supervises, trains and directs the forestry team in tree inspections and patrol activities to ensure compliance with city, state and federal regulations;
- Administrative duties to include: updating tree inventory, record keeping, and coordination of shared equipment.

Qualifications and Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- City of Buffalo residency within six-(6) months of hire date;
- ISA Certified Arborist requirement within 3 months of hire;
- Class B – CDL License requirement within 3 months of hire;
- Minimum of Associate’s Degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Science or related field OR 3 years of equivalent work experience;
- ISATRAQ Certification or similar tree risk assessment experience;
- Climbing and rigging experience preferred;
- Chainsaw safety and operation training required;
- Proven leadership experience and track record of quality and effective employee management;
- Knowledge of and willingness to develop preferred and professional methods, best practices, techniques and requirements for forestry maintenance as they relate to Olmsted standards;
- Working knowledge of different tree species classification, sun and soil preferences, as well as pertinent diseases and insects affecting local tree populations;
- Welcomes change and creativity, and is open to exploring new methods, opportunities, or options, and is supportive of staff feedback and input;
- Professionalism in communication, demeanor and respectful relationship building at the highest level in representing the Conservancy and fostering collaborative partnerships.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Primarily outdoor hands-on work, and may perform under extreme weather conditions;
- Job duties may require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, sit, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, as well as lift and/or move heavy objects which at times could be up to 75 lbs.;
- Job duties may require an employee to drive distances between park locations and/or operate heavy machinery;
- Weekend and holiday work, as needed;
- Working hours – Monday – Friday; 7am – 3pm;
- Flexible hours depending on workload and ever-changing priorities;
- Must be able to adapt to ever-changing resources and limited budgets.
